We ended our living and nonliving things unit by talking about endangered and extinct species. We learned how fossils are created over long periods of time through processes that occur with minerals in the soil. Since fossils can be rare to find we decided to create our own insect fossils! It was a lot of fun!

Here is the recipe if you would like to make them at home:
- 1 1/2 cups of wet, used coffee grounds
- 3/4 cup of cold coffee
- 3/4 cup salt
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- Mix all the ingredients together and add more flour slowly if the dough is too sticky.
- Roll the dough into balls and then flatten. Press the specimen onto to dough carefully.
- Once the imprint has been made, carefully pull the specimen off of the dough.
- Let the dough dry overnight (maybe longer), and you have a brand new fossil.
