Fun day was a blast! The kids went from station to station to play lots of fun games together and the weather could not have been better. It wasn't too hot but we still got to cool down with some delicious popsicles!
We had an awesome time at the Science Center! We explored in small groups all day so I didn't get to snap too many pictures but here are some from our Coaster Creations class. The kids had to try to create a roller coaster with loops for a marble to travel through! They used foam tubes, plastic parts, tape, cardboard, and team work! It was a great day!
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.” - The Lorax To celebrate Earth day we stepped out into nature to look for items on our scavenger hunt list such as flowers, dirt, and clouds. We spent time talking about things kids can do to help our planet such as turning lights off to save electricity, recycling, and conserving fresh water. We ended our living and nonliving things unit by talking about endangered and extinct species. We learned how fossils are created over long periods of time through processes that occur with minerals in the soil. Since fossils can be rare to find we decided to create our own insect fossils! It was a lot of fun!
Here is the recipe if you would like to make them at home:
To kick off our living and nonliving things science unit, we welcomed about 15 crickets into our classroom! We discussed things they needed, things that were not living in their environment, what living things do, and we also learned about what kind of environment would be best for our crickets. After a short visit, we released them into the garden so they could live in their natural environment!
We love learning about the 7 Habits with our awesome fourth grade buddies. We were able to sharpen the saw by relaxing and reading with our buddies, it was perfect for a half day!
Before St. Patrick's Day, we used our knowledge of the design process and our imaginations to create leprechaun traps! The kids were given spaghetti noodles, marshmallows, and free reign to think of a design that could stand up and hopefully trap a leprechaun! Our designs were great but the leprechaun was too tricky. He did leave some gold coins, though!
Crestwood Elementary, in Lindbergh, has created the #CrestFit Whip Workout Challenge and we were happy to try it as a brain break today! Here is the link if you would like to take on the challenge at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ruDMwaB-aQ ! What a great way to get moving and have some fun!
On Friday, our first graders faced the challenge of designing a boat meant to hold as many pennies as possible only using a small piece of foil and straws. First, they created a secret boat and tested it in groups. For round 2, they were able to bounce ideas off each other and discuss how they could make a more efficient boat this time. It was so much fun!
Congratulations, Concord! We have read 1 million minutes! Today my classroom was filled with characters from Star Wars books, Disney books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Biscuit, Ever After High, Junie B. Jones, Angelica the Fairy Angel, comic books, Fancy Nancy, Lego, and American Girl Doll books! We celebrated with a dance party, Read-A-Thon, a special read aloud from Gerald and Piggie, and some visitors from the high school! Keep reading, first grade! Our new goal is 1.7 million minutes!
